Rally-test at Zeals Airfield 2003
There is something about tests at Zeals Airfield that always makes me think
"oh,no, not again". It might be the memory
of the Scimitar full of the smell of clutch smoke. Zeals is long, narrow, and a
magnet for Minis, so test organisers feel obliged to make sure that small cars
have a tricky time of it, which makes life murder for the rest of us. But the
Rally Test organised by the Salisbury and Shaftesbury Car Club promised
something different - and delivered it. Rally-style tests for cars with two
occupants, where " ... walking the course was not in the spirit of the event".
Good, I prefer to sit in the car and drive.
We took the Sabre, and found a wide variety
of both ancient and modern cars lining the hedges. There were, of course, several
minis, but a good selection of Escorts as well, allowing classes for Historic,
Post-historic, and Modern. The largest car taking part was a Triumph 2.5 PI,
the oldest was a TR3, the noisiest were the Escort RS2000 and Mexico, and the
tattiest was ...?
