The place was the grounds of Stourhead House, it was a summer evening in 2002, and the event was an evening
of fancy dress, picnics, music and fireworks, organised by the National Trust. The theme for this year was
"Your favourite ruler". There were no Hitlers, Sadams, Serbian Dictators; no Dianas or
Queen Mothers, in fact very few moderns. A man wearing a wedge-shaped car on his head was, of course, a Princess,
and possibly the most current depiction there.
June and I had left it late to prepare for
the evening and found the local costume shops already booked out. June made our
costumes, ignoring my initial idea of both going covered head to toe with Mazola (Their
Oil Highnesses). Wisely, as it turned out, because the insect population was high, and
we would have become walking fly-papers before the sun had set.
